"Anyone Can Paint & I'll Prove It" with Debbie Ottman-Smith
Learn the fundamentals of painting in acrylics or oil through exercises and projects. Achieve depth using the techniques of the old masters. Colour theory and how to use it to create mood and drama will be taught. This course is designed for beginners to intermediate skill levels and is an excellent choice for the first-timer! The novice will be assigned projects and will experiment with a variety of styles from abstraction to realism while experienced students may choose their own genre and reference material; all will have ample one-on-one time with me.
"Anyone Can Paint, Part Two!" ...ask me to continue your studies. I'll demonstrate tricks for working from 3D references or photos, perfecting perspective, rules for good picture design & more colour exploration.

Awaken Your Senses & Your Art with Nicole McGrath
< oil by Nicole McGrath
Based on Nicolaides' "The Natural Way to Draw" students are guided with techniques where the subject may be fruit, a candle holder, hands... focused on drawing and careful observation. For most of the classes, drawing results are not important, no pressure: the student's development of sensorial skills is the goal. The subject is discovered an rediscovered, without need to produce 'artwork' (even though we use pencil on paper). 'Problems' will correct themselves over time.
As your senses become sharpened, your abilities expand and collaborate to produce better artwork. Students will have the opportunity to test their new skills, creating a finished work in the final classes. Developing keen observation skills are the platform to greater art.
Mondays 6:30 - 9:30 pm 8 weeks [24 hrs] begins April 23 ~ June 18 [No Class Victoria Day, May 21]
...It is not too late to enrol or drop in for a single class, see details below

"Anyone Can Draw with a BRUSH ..." with Debbie Ottman-Smith
< "Mermaid's Dream" graphite on board w/ acrylic glazes by Debbie [click image to enlarge view]
Many have asked me to run my painting course on Tues nights, but drawing skills are required too; after all, your painting can only be as good as you're able to render. This term I will be focusing on these abilities while teaching how to manipulate a brush as well as a pencil. Topics such as perspective, negative space, the value system etc. etc. etc. will be covered in this 'Drawing For Painters' course, a good foundation for other media, so all are welcome. Before we're done we will go over colour mixing and touch on things like mixed media, composition and other problem solving techniques.
Preferred media for this course is acrylic or w/s oil paints and pencils [graphite, coloured or water soluble]
Tuesdays 6:00 - 9:00 pm 10 weeks [30 hrs] April 17 ~ June 19
Anyone Can Draw & I'll Prove It! will return in the fall.
"Anyone Can Do Art & I'll Prove It!" 5 weeks
< "Swimming Mermaid" charcoal on tissue paper by the instructor Debbie Ottman-Smith [click on image for full view]
The foundation for creating images is the focus in these min-Spring-time classes. We will study realism to help build confidence and develop discipline, other genres will be touched upon. Techniques and tricks for manipulating pencils & brushes are demonstrated; choose any medium: pencil (coloured, graphite or water soluble), paints (acrylic, watercolour or w/s oils - no turps).
Students may enrol in all 10 weeks by registering in "Anyone Can Draw with a BRUSH" also based on foundation studies, or for either five week session, here or below.
Note for More Experienced Students: and those returning, may opt to choose their own projects and subject matter having the instructor for assistance and constructive feedback.
Tuesdays 6:00 - 9:00 pm 5 weeks [15 hrs] April 17 ~ May 15
"Anyone Can Do Art & I'll Prove It!" 5 weeks
Spring time is an excellent chance to have an instructor's undivided attention; most people are in their gardens, not in the classroom, particularly this week. Debbie is the instructor, for details please read the above and register by your choice of dates. Note: "Anyone Can Draw with a BRUSH" is the same foundation studies course running 10 weeks, therefore each 5 week session is different.
"Anyone Can Draw & I'll Prove It!" which focuses on the pencil, will return in September.
Keep checking in with us for new additions throughout the spring and summer.
Tuesdays 6:00 - 9:00 pm 5 weeks [15 hrs] begins May 22 ~ June 19
Pencil ...the Medium with Debbie Ottman-Smith
This five week mini-course is focused not just on the pencil but the graphite inside, which comes in many forms. You will learn how to construct a creative composition by examining the rules of good design. Up the WOW factor in your work by experimenting with the vast array of drawing materials available to you. For the realist: demonstrations on achieving special effects such as glass, metal, fur, hair, and dealing with stripes and other difficult patterns. For all genres: tricks for blending graphite with coloured media without creating mud. Anyone can master the pencil, but for the novice or true beginner, I suggest enrolling in a foundational program [e.g. Anyone Can Draw or Do Art] before attending this class. Best suited to the slightly experienced artist.
