Pastel painting allows artists to paint with dry sticks or pencils of pure pigment held together with a binder. The process is immediate, workable and permanent which is why masters such as Degas, Cassat and De La Tour used this rich medium. Colours are laid upon or beside each other, blended or not, and can be removed and re-worked. No waiting for paint to dry or changes in colour as paint dries.
