Art Safari Daytime (Wednesday mornings) Feb – April, 2021

Feb. 17: Life Drawing with a Clothed Model, with Nicholas Crombach. Your chance to draw from a live model!  Life drawing is a fundamental part of art education, essential in learning and practising observation and drawing skills. Nicholas will remove some of the mystery!

Feb. 24: Collage with Barb Carr. No need to draw! Collage is basically cutting and pasting, but the possibilities are endless. The term collage was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th century when collage became a distinctive part of modern art.  We’ll work on two projects, one using magazines and one using tissue paper.

March 3: Felted Landscapes with Bethany Garner. Create a small, wet felted landscape! You will receive a kit of merino wool fibres in various colours, the sheer fabric for overlay, and fibre wetting equipment (a spray bottle and olive oil soap) needed to work the layers of wool fibre into a lovely small landscape felted piece.

March 10: Easy Brushpen Calligraphy with Lori St. Clair: Elegant lines… the ones that remind you of the beauty of penmanship. You’ve wanted to try it. Now is your chance! Follow these simple guided steps designed to create charming, graceful lettering to adorn anything you write. We will take a journey into Calligraphy using lowercase letters that will stir your appetite to examine scripted letters further.

March 17: Intro to oil pastels with Bruce St. Clair. A true cross-over from drawing to painting, oil pastels are known for rich, expressive, juicy colours, as easy to apply as crayons. But they are also capable of subtleties and blended colours. We'll learn and apply basic techniques to an oil pastel painting.

March 24: Intro to Acrylics, with Karen Peperkorn. An introduction to this extremely versatile,
easy-to-use and forgiving medium. We'll learn how to use the brushes effectively as well as mix the colours we want.

March 31: Intro to watercolour with Bruce St. Clair. Learn to "go with the flow" to create beautiful W/C washes, as well as various other brush techniques, and start having fun with this luminous medium.

April 7: Secrets of Realistic Drawing with Bruce St. Clair. We are taught in school how to use our "Left Brain", the logical, practical part. But for art, especially realistic drawing, we need to learn how to use our "Right Brain". This class will teach you three of the most important secrets for doing that.

April 14: Spring Break

April 21: Printmaking with Margaret Bignell and Barb Carr. Explore some of the possibilities that printmaking has to offer! Barb and Margaret will introduce the many ways of doing printmaking, and will lead you through two fun projects: monoprinting using the printing presses, and linocuts which you can print at home.

April 28: Drawing with Charcoal with Bruce St. Clair. Natural charcoal is probably the oldest drawing medium, and next to pencil, still the most commonly used. Students are often surprised at the results they can achieve and how easy charcoal is to use to create not only detail but a wide range of tonal variations. Plus, it's the easiest medium to correct!
