Art Safari Evenings (Thursday 5:45 – 7:45) Jan. – March, 2021
Jan. 28: Matisse papercuts, with Bethany Garner. Plan to come and play! Join Bethany Garner for a free-form and fun-filled session of Improvisational Art Play as we explore the world of MATISSE. You will have time to explore the positive and negative space created when cutting a small collection of original shapes all the while preparing for creating a collage of your design using paper or fabric. With just a pair of small scissors and the furnished papers or fused cotton fabrics hand-dyed by Bethany, each piece will be individual and a joy to make! A small mounting base of industrial felt will be shared for your small masterpiece.
Feb. 4: Wet Felting with Tonya Corkey: Textile art is now on the rise as a higher art form! You may find yourself in a soapy puddle, so wear something comfortable to this class and have fun layering wool to create a beautiful felted painting.
Feb. 11: Life Drawing with a Clothed Model, with Nicholas Crombach. Your chance to draw from a live model! Life drawing is a fundamental part of art education, essential in learning and practising observation and drawing skills. Nicholas will remove some of the mystery!
Feb. 18: Origami with Zenko Takei. The Japanese word, “origami” is a combination of two words: “ori” which means “to fold” and “kami” which means “paper”. In Japanese culture, the crane represents good fortune and longevity, and is referred to as “The Bird of happiness”. Traditionally, it was believed that if one folded 1000 origami cranes, one’s wish would come true. It has also become a symbol of peace, love, hope and healing during challenging times. In some tradition, if given as a gift, it’s a wish for happiness and eternal good luck. Learn how to fold paper cranes in two styles, the traditional style and one which allows to insert candy or a small present.
Feb. 25: Intro to Watercolour with Mei Chi. Watercolour is another versatile yet accessible medium that although dates back to the stone cave paintings are still popular and loved by many artists today. In this introduction to watercolour session, we will learn to experiment and have fun with watercolours while discovering the basic aspects and techniques.
March 4: Printmaking with Margaret Bignell and Barb Carr. Explore some of the possibilities that printmaking has to offer! Barb and Margaret will introduce the many ways of doing printmaking, and will lead you through two fun projects: monoprinting using the printing presses, and linocuts which you can print at home.
March 11: Intro to Mixed Media Collage with Mei Chi. Acrylic, ink, and rice paper on canvas because why not? This unique technique reminds us that there is no set formula for Art making. With an open-minded and willing to get your hands dirty, vibrant results are bound to happen.
March 18: Bookbinding with Tonya Corkey. Build your own sketchbook in this class to keep your future drawings, collages, notes and ideas safe and all in one place! In this class you will also be shown many different approaches to assembling your own sketchbooks and thinking of a sketchbook as its own piece of art.
March 25: Intro to Paper Sculpture with Mei Chi. Though art on paper is much older than art from paper, paper sculptures date from the 17th century. From origami to installations that fill an entire space, paper sculptures are one of the most versatile and accessible materials to create 3-dimensional artworks.
April 1: Powdered Graphite with Tonya Corkey: Shading, textures and details made easy with powdered graphite. Get shown the tips and tricks that will give your drawings a “powerderful” edge!
