Exploring Realism with Charcoal - September

Learn to create realistic drawings with clarity and expressiveness. Students will use photographs and from-life references to explore the principles and techniques of how to render light and form to produce believable drawings in charcoal. Subjects will include portraits, still-life, landscapes, animals, etc. This course focuses on using charcoal as a medium and is not a technical drawing course. Geared towards beginners but open to all.


Mondays, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM


First Class: Monday, September 23, 2024


Last Class: Monday, October 28, 2024


Teaching Artist: Brandon Liesen


Skill Level: Beginner


Location: Front Studio | 647 Princess Street, Unit 101, Kingston, ON, K7L 1E5


Required age: Over 16 years old on the day of the activity


Notes: Students are asked to bring:

  • Compressed charcoal pencils (i.e., General's charcoal pencils) -Extra soft or Soft and Medium
  • Jumbo compressed charcoal (sticks) (not required but recommended)
  • Willow or vine charcoal
  • White pastel or white charcoal pencil
  • Erasable red or orange colored pencil (suggest Prismacolor Col-Erase Colored Pencil in Carmine Red or any red pencil WITH AN ERASER that can be erased easily)
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Pen style eraser (i.e. Tombow MONO Zero Pen-Style Eraser or any pencil style eraser)
  • Exacto or craft razor knife or manual pencil sharpener (razor preferred) . 1 small piece of sandpaper (fine grit (i.e. 220))
  • Charcoal paper (or any quality drawing paper) (11”x 14” size or larger…best to buy a large 18” x 24” pad as it is the best value because you can split sheets of paper in half… Strathmore Drawing Paper recommended: https://canada.michaels.com/en/strathmore-400-series-recycled-drawing-pad/M10068167.html
  • Blending stumps (various sizes)
  • Facial tissues, small soft cloth or soft makeup brushes
  • 18" Ruler
  • Drafting or woodworking compass (aka dividers)
  • Quality art tape or low tack painter’s/masking tape
  • Black and white photo references (not needed for 1st class)
