Drawing for Teens

Through a series of projects using photo reference, students will practice foundational drawing techniques and be guided through the process of creating finished pieces! Everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace and there is no expected amount of pieces they should finish. Returning students, or those who show understanding of the techniques covered in the first couple projects, have the option to bring in their own references! If you're looking to build your confidence and skill to tackle a drawing, regardless of the subject matter, then this is for you! Further drawing approaches will be imparted as students progress, and are tailored to their interests.

Head to Toe

Working in dry media, you will create a series of studies of the human body! Through these you will develop an understanding of the forms and movement of the body, and learn to simplify the structures of the figure for compelling and effective drawings. Starting with the head and portrait, this course will cover body parts in isolation, before putting it all together. Throughout the course we also discuss and problem-solve a variety of topics such as foreshortening, posing, capturing a likeness, expression, and more.

Portfolio Preparation

Intended for students who are working towards completing a portfolio for post-secondary education, this course will be a space to receive feedback and support as they work on creating a strong, curated set of pieces. This is an independently structured class; to start we will discuss what will stand out to the programs you are considering, and the goals for your portfolio. Students should be prepared to take some initiative outside of class for preliminary work such as gathering references. Basic materials are provided, but students may be encouraged to buy materials for their personal use depending on what kind of work they are doing.
