Read and Create
In this mixed media-packed course, students will create art projects based on popular children's books. They will explore various mediums like acrylics, watercolors, oil pastels, etc. They will also make one large piece inspired by "Where's Waldo?" At the end of the course, students will walk away with a knowledge of various mediums and a set of artworks representative of popular wholesome books for their collection. Little Masters
In this course, students will learn about the artistic masters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and create their own artworks inspired by the styles of these individuals. We will consider artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, and Andy Warhol. Still Life Stage
Together we will explore the fundamentals of drawing - from lines to shapes, textures to colours! A still-life is a static scene, but we will be bringing them to life through our drawings and paintings. You will be invited to bring items from home to supplement the objects we have available. Character Illustration
In this course, students will learn how to draw original characters and explore storytelling through art. Manga is back by popular demand! This time, join Teaching Artist Yume Wu for "More Manga!" We will learn about manga, from how it's made to its long history in this course. In this course, students will work with the instructor to prepare a professional college art portfolio showcasing the applicant's best design qualities. Introduction to Sewing
"Introduction to Sewing" will allow students to explore the art of hand sewing with different stitching techniques and fabrics. It is accessible for students who are new to sewing and those with some knowledge already in their pockets. This will be a unique course in which students will be able to have fun and be creative with their sewing creations. Making Comics
"Making Comics" is an in-depth, immersive multi-week program designed to break down barriers to entry and guide creatives through the process of comic creation. Whether they are a seasoned artist looking to expand their skills, a storyteller interested in expressing themselves through the medium of comics, or a beginner inspired by pop culture, this course will be a valuable step forward on their creative journey. Comprehensive Crochet
Go from zero to crochet hero with this "Comprehensive Crochet" Course for complete beginners to learn to crochet. Learn how to hold the hook, how to chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, slip stitch, and increasing and decreasing stitches. You will learn the basics of reading crochet patterns starting with reading one that Facilitator Lisa Leskien created. Projects that you will create will be: a washcloth, a granny sqaure bag, crochet in the round for an adorable bear hat, and our final project will be the student's choice where Lisa will guide you through your choice of crochet creation. Art of Storytelling
Stories are told through images, but did you know there are ways to strengthen those stories even more? Participants will learn visual storytelling through composition and perspective. This class will teach participants an umbrella of visual storytelling tools, which can be applied to graphic novels, bookmaking, and graphic design. Intro to Sculpture
Students will learn the basics of sculpture and creating art in three dimensions. Intro to Woodcut Printmaking
In this course, students will learn the techniques of woodblock printmaking from start to finish. Students will have the opportunity to design their prints, carve their own wood blocks, and print their blocks using a printing press and at-home techniques. Intro to Painting with Acrylics
In this course students with learn about creating finished paintings from sketching to finishing the canvas for hanging. Students will develop their colour mixing and composition skills, and learn to scale artwork from sketches to canvas. Students will create several finished pieces exploring different themes and subjects, including the use of colour, still-lifes, as well as student’s choice.
